18th Century Witchert Property
Project Brief
Our clients invited Ellis Carter Ltd to undertake a comprehensive renovation of Anvil Cottage, a beautiful 18th-century witchert property located in Aylesbury. Rich in character and historic charm, the property required a sensitive approach to modernisation, balancing the needs of contemporary family living with the preservation of its unique period features.
The brief was to carry out a full internal renovation, upgrading the property's infrastructure, improving functionality, and refreshing every room throughout the home. As with many historic buildings, the project presented a number of challenges along the way, requiring careful planning, specialist knowledge, and attention to detail to ensure the character of the cottage remained intact.
Over the course of six months, our team transformed the property into a comfortable, practical, and beautifully finished family home while respecting the heritage and individuality of the building.
Scope Of Work
The project required a combination of traditional building techniques and modern renovation practices to achieve the desired result while preserving the property's original character.
The Results
Working within a property of this age and construction brought a variety of unforeseen challenges, which is often the case with historic buildings. However, our experienced team was able to quickly identify solutions and adapt throughout the project, ensuring progress remained on track while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship.
The property's exposed timber beams, irregular layouts, and traditional construction methods required a particularly thoughtful approach. Significant care was taken to ensure new elements blended naturally with the original features, creating a seamless balance between old and new.
The completed renovation has breathed new life into Anvil Cottage while retaining everything that makes the property special. Modern electrical and plumbing systems, beautifully finished bathrooms, bespoke joinery, and carefully restored interiors have transformed the home into a welcoming and functional space for modern family life.
Completed over a six-month period, the project stands as a fantastic example of how period properties can be sympathetically renovated to meet contemporary living requirements while preserving their historic charm. We were delighted to hand the keys back to the family and see them begin the next chapter in their beautifully restored home.
